TCL/TK
Tcl stands for "Tool Command Language". Usually it is not written as TCL, but Tcl, and pronounced as "tickle".
It is a scripting language and interpreter set invented by John Ousterhout, a professor of computer science at the Berkeley University, in 1988.
It is string-based, has an easy syntax to learn, but give all necessary functions for advanced users. It is mainly used for rapid prototyping, scripting, designing GUIs and test case scenarios. Tcl can also be used as a CGI script language.
String-based means that any expression can be seen as string, numeric, a list or any other
value. If a conversion is needed, it is done immediately. A string with
spaces can be interpreted as a list, where the blanks are the delimiters of the
list members. Even the code itself can be manipulated as strings, and strings can be evaluated
as code. Errors can be catched trough a
catch command.
There are lots of extensions available for Databases, Java binding and Graphical User Interfaces.
Tk is such an extension. Tcl/Tk stands for the scripting language Tcl and the graphical extension Tk. Tk is a library of basic elements and tools for building graphical user interfaces within Tcl. It is open source, and is available for different operation systems. Tk provides basic widgets, top-level windows and geometric managers to build GUI applications. First designed for Tcl, is is now used by other script language developers.
