JAVA

Java is a object oriented programming language invented by Sun Microsystems. It was derived from a language named OAK, which was used for developing for real time applications in set top boxes and handheld devices since 1991. In the middle of the nineties Sun changed it into java to get a programming language for the booming internet.

Java has much of its syntax from C++, but has an easier object model, and avoided some of the pitfalls of C.

Java is platform independent. Program code is first compiled to a platform independent byte code, which can be interpreted by a interpreter, the "Virtual Machine". This machine converts the byte code to actual system commands. For real time systems there are compilers available (JIT).

JavaScript is a scripting language, which is not directly related to Java, but shares some syntax and a part of its name.

Java is a de facto standard in programming. The language itself is not yet standardized by an ISO process. Since November 2006 some parts of Java are released as Open Source under the GNU General Public License by SUN.
